About this piece
Gajalakshmi is one of the oldest depictions of Lakshmi in Indian art, found on Buddhist railings at Sanchi and Bharhut centuries before it entered temple sculpture: the goddess seated on a lotus while a pair of elephants pour water over her in abhishek. The form is traditionally associated with fortune and royal grace, and the elephants are what distinguish it from a plain Lakshmi panel.
Where it works
18″ × 12″ at 4 kg. The composition is horizontal and symmetrical, which makes it read well centred — above a doorway, over a puja shelf, or on the wall facing an entrance where it is the first thing seen on the way in.
Finish and care
Supplied in your choice of Natural or Antique. Natural leaves the brass bright and it will mellow with age; Antique is darkened into the recesses so the detailing reads more sharply from a distance. Clean with a soft dry cotton cloth. Do not use harsh chemicals or metal polishing liquids.
