About this piece
Siddhartha Gautama is said to have attained enlightenment while meditating beneath a peepal tree at Bodh Gaya, and that tree — the Bodhi tree — became one of the oldest symbols in Buddhist art. Here the Buddha sits in meditation while the branches sprawl outward and close into a circular canopy around him, so the whole composition reads as a disc from a distance and resolves into detail as you approach.
Where it works
A 44″ × 44″ circle weighing 21 kg, this wants to be the only thing on its wall. It suits a living room feature wall, a prayer hall, or the long blank wall of a stairwell where a circular form does something a rectangular painting cannot. Supplied in a solid wooden crate; plan a masonry fixing rather than a drywall anchor.
Finish and care
Supplied in your choice of Natural or Antique. Natural leaves the brass bright and it will mellow with age; Antique is darkened into the recesses so the detailing reads more sharply from a distance. Clean with a soft dry cotton cloth. Do not use harsh chemicals or metal polishing liquids.
